MDM 2017: 3D printing, UAV threats underestimated

The potential threat to future military operations represented by 3D printing and small commercial UAVs has been underappreciated and underestimated.

That was the opinion of one panelist at Modern Day Marine 2017 on 20 September during a discussion looking at challenges to future operating environments. 

Lt Col Mark Smydra, Marine Corps Intelligence Activity, asked panel member David Knoll from the Center for Naval Analysis to identify ‘some of the commercial technologies that are not receiving much attention but that will challenge the future US military'.

Knoll responded by saying ‘one that doesn’t get much attention and one that gets attention,
