The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) exhibited an Insitu ScanEagle UAV loaded on a Type 73 medium truck at the Fuji School on 7 July, possibly a harbinger of wider use of UAVs by Japan’s military.

The ScanEagle is currently fielded by the Military Intelligence School, which was established as part of the Fuji School in March 2018. Additionally, the 8th Military Intelligence Unit of the 8th Division that was created in March 2019 is using this UAV.

The wider deployment of the ScanEagle is expected to see greater use of UAVs by the JGSDF.
