According to the Naval Postgraduate School's Defense Analysis Department and the US Army Asymmetric Warfare Group's (AWG's) Subterranean Working Group, the proliferation of subterranean structures '… continues unabated among [state actors] with hostile intentions, including rogue states, insurgent and terrorist networks.'
'The most modern underground facilities incorporate design features that make them essentially impervious to air or missile attack. Currently, ground assault options are limited to small special operations forces contingents,' AWG documentation argued.
