SM-2 sale to Chile moves closer
Chile is likely to receive up to 16 rail-launched Standard Missile-2 (SM-2) Block IIIA missiles and associated equipment from Raytheon in an estimated $85 million FMS deal.
‘This proposed sale would support Chile’s anti-air warfare capabilities for the two recently transferred former [Royal Australian Navy] Adelaide-class frigates to the Chilean Navy,’ the US State Department announced on 5 February.
The FMS package (which still requires approval from Congress) also includes two MK 89 Mod 0 guidance sections and one MK 45 Mod 14 target detection device kit, as well as maintenance, spare parts and logistics support.
The two Adelaide-class vessels (ex-HMAS Melbourne and ex-HMAS Newcastle, renamed Almirante Latorre and Capitan Prat) arrived in Chile in April 2020.
