Safe Boats wins pre-production work on two Mk VI boats for Ukraine
Naval Sea Systems Command in the US has awarded Safe Boats International a $19.97 million contract for long lead-time material and associated pre-production and planning support for two Mk VI patrol boats to be delivered to Ukraine.
Work is expected to be completed by December 2022, the DoD noted on 5 January.
The US State Department in June 2020 approved a potential FMS deal for Ukraine, worth $600 million, for a maximum of 16 Mk VI boats.
Mk VI boats can be fitted with ballistic protection, in the form of armoured plating around the engines and fuel tanks.
They can also be armed with a variety of crew served and remotely operated weapons: the FMS package includes 32 MSI Seahawk A2 gun systems and 40 MK44 cannons.
