Netherlands deploys HNLMS Karel Doorman to Caribbean
The Ministry of Defence of the Netherlands has deployed the HNLMS Karel Doorman (A833) to the Caribbean for an initial period until July 2020.
The decision was taken to transport supplies and soldiers to the Dutch overseas territories in the region. These will then be used to strengthen the military assistance given to civilian health authorities in dealing with the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.
HNLMS Karel Doorman is a multi-function amphibious Joint Support Ship with a top speed of 18kt and a maximum range of 18,520km.
The Dutch Minister of Defence, Ank Bijleveld-Schouten also took part in a meeting with defence ministers from NATO on 15 April with the aim of improving coordination of relief efforts and assistance between the alliance members.
