Kormoran II MCM vessels to include Kraken equipment

Kraken Robotics is to provide mine-hunting systems to the Polish Navy, in the form of its Katfish towed synthetic aperture sonar system, Tentacle winch and Autonomous Launch and Recovery System (ALARS).

The Canadian company will deliver this equipment in the second half of 2021, for integration with new Kormoran II-class MCM vessels in Gdansk.

Kraken was unable to disclose financial details about the contract for confidentiality reasons, although the company noted on 8 September that it is ‘significant’ and ‘we expect it to be a strong enabler within other NATO nations’.

Karl Kenny, president and CEO of Kraken, added that there would be additional sales opportunities for Katfish and ALARS if Poland finds export customers for Kormoran II.

Capt Piotr Sikora, head of the Naval Warfare Systems Branch in the Polish Navy’s Armament Division, noted: ‘The building of new capabilities and acquiring the most advanced equipment is necessary to counter the naval mine threat in the difficult shallow water and very shallow water zones.  This was our goal during long and complex trials of our first ship, ORP Kormoran.’

Shephard Defence Insight notes that current order for three Kormoran II vessels is enough to cover minimal operational requirements of the Polish Navy, although it is widely believed that the optimal number should be at least twice as many platforms.
