INS Magen sets out on delivery voyage
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on 5 November that the first Sa’ar 6 corvette for the Israeli Navy has embarked on its delivery voyage from the German Naval Yards Kiel shipyard.
INS Magen will eventually be joined by three other corvettes (the future INS Oz, INS Independence, and INS Victory), to patrol the Israeli EEZ and protect the country's gas reserves, shipping lanes and other assets in the Mediterranean.
Construction began in February 2018 and the Israeli Navy originally planned to introduce the four vessels into service from 2020-2022, but this timetable has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Sa’ar 6 class offers enhanced attack capabilities compared with the predecessor Sa’ar 5 vessels. Armament on the new corvettes includes 16 anti-ship missiles as well as 40 Barak 8 naval SAMs and two C-Dome naval point defence systems.
