New Zealand rejuvenates sniper rifle inventory

The New Zealand Army has selected US company Barrett to fulfil a requirement for two types of new sniper rifle: the 12.7mm M107A1 anti-materiel rifle and the .338 Lapua Magnum Multi-Role Adaptive Design (MRAD) sniper rifle.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) will acquire 40 of the former and 42 of the latter, along with associated tripods, day sights, suppressors and ballistic computers, at a cost of NZ$4 million ($2.8 million).

First deliveries are expected in mid-2018, and the weapons will be used by both regular infantry battalions and special forces in the SAS.
