Eurosatory 2018: Iveco engaged with Italian Army orders

13th June 2018 - 06:00 GMT | by Beth Maundrill in Paris

While Iveco did not release any new platforms at this year’s Eurosatory the Italian company is moving ahead with two of its newest platforms, the Centauro II and the Light Multirole Vehicle (LMV) II.

The company displayed the 8x8 wheeled armoured vehicle Centauro II at Eurosatory 2018 after unveiling the platform during the same event in 2016.

Speaking to reporters at the event in Paris, Claudio Catalano VP product development and sales engineering at Iveco said that the company has carried out ‘two years of intensive testing and validation' with the Italian Army.

He added that the company is currently in the advanced stages of negotiations for the delivery of the first 11 units. Testing of the fully integrated vehicle, with all mission systems, will be completed within the next months.

The company also displayed its Vector 8 engine which is integrated onto the Centauro II. The 20-litre engine has a 90˚ V8 architecture engine and a maximum power of 720hp at 1,800 rpm.

Meanwhile, the company has completed testing with the Italian Army for the LMV 2 and Catalano said that the first deliveries are scheduled for the end of 2018.

Two models of the LMV II were presented at Eurosatory 2018, one unequipped vehicle and one fitted with all the C4ISR systems and the RWS required by the Italian Army which ordered 34 units in 2016.

The company is also positioning itself for future contracts with the Italian Army as Catalano noted that requirements were soon to be released for the evolution of the VBM Freccia IFV platform.

‘This will keep us occupied for the next years definitely and the demand will be, not only to increase…the level of survivability, mobility and lethality of the vehicle but there will be more and more areas in which significant development has to be considered.’

These areas include the integration of C4I, navigation systems active defence and electric hybrid driveline systems.

‘This evolution will definitely change how the operation will be conducted.’

The Italian Army has deployed the 8x8 Freccia to Afghanistan. In 2006, the army ordered 172 IFV, 36 anti-tank, 20 command and 21 mortar carrier variants as well as an initial batch of the ambulance model.
