DRS to provide surveillance suites for Canadian LRSS project
DRS Technologies will provide long-range, mast-mounted surveillance suites for the Canadian Army’s Light Armored Vehicle – Reconnaissance Surveillance System (LRSS) project, it has been announced.
The eight-year, firm fixed-fee contract worth around $100 million was issued by General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada to DRS Sustainment Systems. Under the contract, DRS will produce the surveillance suite and operator control stations as well as provide programme engineering and service support.
For this programme, DRS updated its Surveillance and Battlefield Reconnaissance Equipment (SABRE) modular sensor suite, which integrates radar, thermal imaging, and laser systems on a mast. SABRE is compatible with any battle command network type and enables scouts, forward observers, and tactical air controllers to perform reconnaissance and targeting at extended ranges.
The SABRE system facilitates operations when hidden or on the move and shares targeting data from multiple sensors across battle command networks. To develop the system for the LRSS project, DRS partnered with Thales-Canada, the prime contractor for the tactical battle management system of the Canadian army.
