Taiwan inaugurates South China Sea facilities
With international attention focused on Chinese reclamation of reefs in the South China Sea in recent months, Taiwan has inaugurated new harbour facilities on Taiping Island (Itu Aba in Chinese) in the same region.
On 12 December, Taiwan’s Minister of the Interior Chen Wei-zen, and Minister of the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) Wang Chung-yi, presided over a ceremony to open a renovated wharf and lighthouse on the 46-hectare island.
The Taiwanese government said these were part of the Taiping Island Transportation Infrastructure Project and that construction had been ongoing for two years and cost $108 million. The wharf now allows
