Fincantieri launches ninth Italian FREMM frigate
Fincantieri has launched the Italian Navy’s newest FREMM frigate, Spartaco Schergat, at the integrated shipyard of Riva Trigoso, Genoa, Italy, the company announced on 26 January.
The multipurpose frigate is the ninth of a series of ten frigates being built by Fincantieri as part of the Italian-French FREMM programme, under the coordination of the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation. Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (51% Fincantieri and 49% Leonardo) is the prime contractor for Italy in the FREMM programme.
The vessel will now continue fitting out activities in the integrated naval shipyard of Muggiano, La Spezia, Italy. Delivery of the vessel is scheduled for 2020.
The 144m long FREMM frigates have a beam of 19.7m with a displacement at full load of approximately 6,700t. The vessels have been designed to reach a maximum speed of 27kt and can accommodate a crew of 200.
The FREMM frigates are intended to replace the Italian Navy’s Lupo and Maestrale class vessels.
