D&S 2017: Japan now to donate TC-90s to Philippines

After a recent change made to Japanese laws, Tokyo will now donate five second-hand TC-90 (a Beechcraft King Air variant) aircraft to the Philippines. 

Under the original agreement, the Philippines was leasing the aircraft for a sum of $28,200 annually. Japan’s Ministry of Defence made the announcement on 25 October.

The decision to donate the aircraft was presaged by regulations changed in the last ordinary session of Japan’s parliament. Subsequently, Tokyo can now donate second-hand defence equipment to developing countries.

Manila had requested that the deal be changed from a lease into a donation when the two countries’ defence
