NATO should ‘take to the field’ in countering hybrid operations
Amid a return to Great Power competition between NATO, Russia and an emergent China, a former Supreme Allied Commander Europe has called for the alliance to counter operations being conducted below the threshold of full-scale war but which nevertheless represented a clear threat to its institutional integrity.
Retired former USAF Gen Philip Breedlove (pictured above in 2013) said in a 25 June briefing to select media representatives that NATO had ‘to take the field’ in a conflict he described as ‘war below the line’.
Also known as hybrid warfare, this type of conflict sees the use of cyber, information warfare
