BAE Systems has been chosen by the US Air Force (USAF) to provide its friend or foe identification technology for the USAF’s HH-60W combat rescue helicopter, the company announced on 9 March.

BAE will provide its common missile warning system (CMWS) and AN/DPX-7 Reduced Size Transponder (RST) to the USAF. The transponder supports sense-and-avoid and combat identification applications with its Mode 5 and ADS-B In/Out capabilities. It is used in several manned and unmanned aircraft, including the MQ-4C Triton.

The third-generation CMWS system includes data recording and hostile fire indication capabilities to detect and evade rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire. The system also performs post-mission analysis.

John Watkins, VP, business development, BAE Systems, said: ‘When airmen enter into dangerous situations to rescue wounded soldiers, they require the best technology available to safeguard them during these vital missions and provide them with situational awareness.

‘By equipping the combat rescue helicopter with RST and CMWS, the USAF can be confident that its airmen will be using technology that has been proven in theatre on multiple US Army and Navy platforms.’
