Ukraine returns to service EW helicopters

The Ukrainian Air Force has returned to service two Soviet-era Mi-8 EW helicopters after a prolonged grounding.

Both of these otherwise little-used machines, produced in the late 1980s, were cycled through overhaul at the Aviakon aircraft repair plant in Kontop, a subsidiary of state-owned Ukroboronprom, under a programme launched in 2015, with a budget of ₴20.055 million (equating to US$726,000 at the time), and most likely covering the airframes and general systems only.

The overhauled helicopters were handed over to the Ukrainian military during a high-profile ceremony held on 21 December 2018 at Ozernoe, attended by the country’s president Petro
