Taiwan rejects MH-60R offer

Sources at the inaugural Kaohsiung International Maritime & Defence Exhibition in Taiwan in mid-September informed Shephard that the island had turned down a proposal from the US to sell 8-10 Sikorsky MH-60R helicopters.

The Republic of China Navy (ROCN) needs to replace its ageing MD500 anti-submarine helicopters, but a defence industry source said there was not enough money to go around.

Instead, the ROCN’s main focus is its future shipbuilding programme that will cost $14.7 billion over a 23-year period out to 2040. This large construction programme will exclude the possibility of funding the MH-60Rs for now, said a local
