The Turkish government has announced a $648 million budget for the development of its first indigenous helicopter, which is being produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI).

According to Turkish news reports, the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM) has reserved $648 million for ‘research’ to advance the helicopter project, and claims the five-ton platform will be ready for use by September 2018.

The programme to develop an indigenous helicopter for both military and civilian applications was launched in 2010 when a Turkish government committee appointed TAI as the prime contractor.

The SSM released an initial RFP for the project
