New Sky Viper ready to disrupt FARA

Northrop Grumman has revealed a 20mm chain gun named Sky Viper — will it be considered as an alternative to the General Dynamics XM915 cannon?

Northrop Grumman has revealed it is developing a first production prototype of a new Sky Viper 20mm chain gun, based on the 30mm M230 design.

The US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center (DEVCOM AC) has funded development of the weapon. However, despite Northrop Grumman considering it an alternative for the service’s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) effort, only the General Dynamics XM915 20mm cannon will be provided to Bell (360 Invictus) and Sikorsky (Raider X) as Government Furnished Equipment when both aircraft compete in a flyoff phase, scheduled for Q4 2022.
