Northrop Grumman has been awarded a contract to provide its FlightPro Gen III mission computers for Lot 12 of the US Marine Corps' (USMC) H-1 helicopter upgrade programme, the company announced on 9 July.

The contract from US naval air systems command will see Northrop Grumman provide its next-generation mission computer for the USMC's UH-1Y and AH‑1Z helicopters. They are expected to be the first helicopters to get the latest FlightPro mission computer. Work under this contract will take place from October 2016 to October 2017.

The company will provide identical units of the FlightPro Gen III for the UH-1Y twin-engine medium size utility helicopter and the AH‑1Z twin-engine attack helicopter. The two helicopters make up the USMC's light attack helicopter squadrons.

The mission computer features four independent, multi-function displays and mission, weapons and video processing capabilities. It provides centralised control and shows aircraft performance and flight instruments as well as onboard sensor and survivability displays. It also has a modular architecture for upgrading the system with new technologies and capabilities.

Ike Song, vice president, situational awareness systems, Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems, said: 'This contract reaffirms that customer demand is strong and underscores the critical role our proven avionics equipment has in enhancing C4ISR capabilities through helicopter upgrades. Our mission computer is ideal for customers who want an open architecture solution that can be applied to multiple platforms, resulting in greater affordability and efficiency.'
