Mexican Air Force pilots gather with US dignitaries and officials for a group photo in front of one of the five Bell Helicopters delivered to the Mexican government in a ceremony at Fort Worth, Texas, 8 December.

These multi-purpose utility helicopters are part of the Merida initiative and will contribute to the national security of the United States by helping to improve Mexico’s fight against criminal organizations, drugs, and gang activities. They will increase the Mexican Air Force’s air capabilities to support its interdiction activities, rapid response of law enforcement in Mexico, and support for the civilian population in natural disasters.

The initiative was signed by President George W. Bush and Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon in 2007.

General de Grupo P.A. DEMA Adelaido de la Sancha Villa, Section Chief, Air Force Joint Chiefs of staff accepted delivery of the aircraft on behalf of the Mexican government.

Spare and repair parts, equipment, technical data, training and logistical support are included in the sale with an estimated total value of $93 million.
