Limited Ice Protection System (LIPS) has received EASA certification for the AW189 super medium twin engine helicopter, AgustaWestland announced on 28 September.

The AW189 is the first helicopter of its type to earn an ice protection system certification. The system will enhance the helicopter’s all-weather capabilities.

The LIPS can conduct the operations like search and rescue, and offshore and passenger transport in limited icing conditions. If the system has the information about the capability to descend into a known band of positive temperature throughout the intended route, typical of conditions encountered, only then it permits flight within a known and defined envelope of icing conditions.

The system is offered as an option. It includes Supercooled Larger Droplet (SLD) marker, detectors, heated windshield and Ice Accretion Meter. It does not need heated rotor blades or associated equipment. The engine air intake heating system is already incorporated into the standard AW189 helicopter. The helicopter fitted with LIPS retains the performance and procedures for Cat. A operations.
