Leonardo and PGZ have teamed to collaborate on the AW249 helicopter to be offered for the Polish Army’s combat helicopter requirement.

Under a newly signed Letter of Intent the companies will explore collaboration in a number of areas including design, manufacturing, final assembly, marketing and aftersales support for the AW249 helicopter.

The helicopter have a MTOW in the range of 7-8 tonne and useful load in excess of 1800kgs. It will be fitted with advanced communication and battlefield management systems allowing it to operate and manage UAS.

In addition to a turreted gun, the AW249 will have a flexible weapon system with six wing store stations that can carry a combination of air-to-ground or air-to-air missiles, unguided/guided rockets or external fuel tanks. Two engines will allow for operations in all cold, hot and high and maritime conditions.

Should Leonardo be selected by the Polish Ministry of Defence for the new helicopter requirement, companies in the PGZ Group will take part in the manufacture and servicing of the helicopters.
