Iran brings in rotary firepower
The firepower of the Iranian Army Aviation’s (IRIAA) helicopter units has been starkly illustrated during a recent counter-narcotics operation.
On 21 July, the IRIAA’s 3rd Combat Support Group (3rd CSG) based in Kerman International Airport was tasked to provide fire support for the Iranian Police’s counter-narcotics unit following the detection of a large convoy of heavily-armed drug traffickers some 140km north of Shahdad, Kerman province.
The convoy was detected advancing toward Kerman by an Iranian Police Aviation Force (IRIPA) Cessna T.206H equipped with FLIR sensor. Due to the unavailability of the IRIPA’s Mi-171Shs armed helicopter, the Iranian police headquarters appealed
