Honeywell announced today it has delivered the first 28 Honeywell T55-L-714A engines and fielding kits for the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense (MOD) Chinook helicopters, as part of the $185 million contract awarded last year to upgrade the existing Honeywell engines.

The upgraded engines increase power by 17 percent and reduce fuel consumption by nearly 5 percent.

“Honeywell’s new 714A engine significantly increases power for the Chinooks, a necessity for operating hot and high in Afghanistan,” said Paul Vidano, vice president of Militaries and Operators, Honeywell Aerospace. “Increased power and fuel efficiency mean the soldiers can go further, lift more and deliver more troops and ammunition.”

More than 5,300 T55 engines have been delivered since its launch, with more than seven million hours of global operation.

Honeywell has provided engines for the UK MOD since they acquired a Chinook fleet more than 20 years ago. Honeywell also provides the inertial navigation system for UK’s CH-47 Chinook helicopters.

Honeywell’s engines are available for both legacy CH-47D and new CH-47F helicopters.
