Heli-Expo 2009 - Eurocopter launches cockpit camera / flight data recorder

A tiny, palm-sized flight data recorder was the biggest news story from Eurocopter press conference at Heli-Expo in Anaheim on Sunday.

Revealed by American Eurocopter President and CEO Marc Paganini, the device, called the ALERTS (Aircraft Logging and Event Recording for Training and Safety) Vision 1000, collects cockpit images and cabin sounds combined with GPS and flight data to give operators an opportunity to enhance the management of their operations.

Mounted in the cabin, and pointing into the cockpit, the system records high-resolution still images four times a second and records the noises heard in the cabin.
