A contract awarded to BAE Systems to carry out deeper maintenance on the Australian Army’s Sikorsky S-70A-9 Black Hawk helicopter fleet will support nearly 100 jobs in Townsville.

The three-year contract, with extension options based upon satisfactory performance, is valued at approximately AUD $35 million, and is due to commence in February 2010. It will replace the current Black Hawk Deeper Maintenance contract which BAE Systems Australia has held since 1995.

The scope of contract work covers both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, including deeper maintenance and special servicing, structural repairs and a wide range of other modifications.

A total of 34 Black Hawk helicopters will be maintained by BAE Systems and this contract work will be carried out at its new hangar facility located in the Northern Australian Aerospace Centre of Excellence (NAACEX) at Townsville Airport.

Mike Shaw, General Manager Aviation Maintenance and Support Services said that the contract would sustain 90 highly skilled aviation technical and engineering jobs in Townsville.

“As the only major military aviation support company with a commercially tenanted hangar presence in Townsville, we are committed to supporting the Australian Defence Force (ADF)’s current and future aviation needs in northern Queensland,” Mr Shaw said.

“I believe that this contract award also reflects the commitment that BAE Systems has shown during the past 14 years in providing and maintaining the highest level of quality service to Army Aviation.”
