Japan’s development of a next-generation, multipurpose rotorcraft under the UH-X programme will likely result in a new contender on the export market, it has emerged.

Fuji Heavy Industries’ (FHI) proposal for the UH-X for the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) was chosen by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in mid-July.

FHI has pitched an updated Bell 412EP platform for the UH-X programme, with Fuji cooperating with Bell Helicopter for the development.

The MoD plans to purchase 150 UH-Xs over a 20-year period with the first craft delivered by the end of March 2018 with a unit price estimated at JPY1.2
