Discussions put Rafale in play for Iraq

​Talks are only at an early stage, and questions remain over how procurement of the fourth-generation multirole aircraft would be funded

The idea of Iraq buying the Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft is a long way from turning into reality, but it still reflects an interesting picture of opinion in Baghdad.

Lt Gen Juma Anad Saadoun, the Iraqi Minister of Defence, said in a 10 November statement that the Iraqi Air Force (IQAF) aims to become the fifth confirmed export customer for Rafale.

‘There is a plan to buy fourth-generation fighter jets from France,’ he said, adding that the topic was discussed the week before in a meeting in Paris with his French counterpart Florence Parly.
