The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed it will purchase a third Zephyr high altitude pseudo satellite (HAPS) as part of a £13 million contract with Airbus Defence and Space (DS).

The MoD initially awarded the company a contract in February in 2016 for two of the aircraft with operational tests set to take place in 2017.

The three aircraft will form a part of an operational concept demonstrator. According to the MoD the additional Zephyr-S will enable two airframes to be testing simultaneously and demonstrate operational handover to show the capability can be sustained indefinitely.
