Northrop Grumman’s MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft system (UAS) in development for the US Navy has completed operational assessment (OA), it was announced on 16 February.

An integrated test team of navy personnel from air test and evaluation squadrons VX-1 and VX-20, unmanned patrol squadron VUP-19 and Northrop Grumman conducted the OA to check the reliability of Triton over approximately 60 flight hours.

The team validated radar performance and analysed sensor imagery from Triton's sensors at different ranges and altitudes. The aircraft system's ability to disseminate critical data and classify targets was also examined. Additionally, it was confirmed that Triton meets the flight duration requirements by evaluating its time on station.

The OA is currently pending final data analysis. Once complete, it will pave the way for a positive milestone C decision that will move Triton into low rate initial production.

Doug Shaffer, vice president, Triton programs, Northrop Grumman, said: ‘Operational assessment for Triton included several flights which exercised the weapon system through operationally relevant scenarios that demonstrated its readiness to meet the navy's maritime intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance needs.

‘As a result of the flight tests, the programme moves one step closer to a milestone C decision later this spring.’
