Technology hindering UAV integration

Despite industry frustration at the slow pace of regulatory reform needed to allow commercial UAV operations, the enabling detect and avoid technology is simply not mature enough, according to three key regulators.

At the Commercial UAV Show in London on 21 October, representatives from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) were grilled about why the airspace integration aspect was taking so long.

For example, the CAA has a three stage approach that doesn’t envisage ‘seamless integration’ until 2028 when the full regulatory framework will be in place.
