The US Army has awarded a $3.4 million foreign military sales contract to AeroVironment to supply RQ-11B Raven unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for the Spanish Ministry of Defense, the company announced on 20 August.

Raven is designed for rapid deployment and high mobility for military applications that need low-altitude reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence. The hand-launched Raven weighs around 4.2lbs and has a wingspan of 4.5 feet. It provides aerial observation at line-of-sight ranges up to approximately 6.2 miles.

Kirk Flittie, vice president and general manager, unmanned aircraft systems business segment, AeroVironment, said: ‘All US armed services and more than thirty global allied forces rely on our unmanned aircraft systems to gain rapid intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance for information superiority in today’s hot zones.

‘Our small UAS deliver powerful insight, on-demand for valuable, real-time situational awareness – whenever and wherever needed – that helps military personnel operate more safely and effectively.’
