Martek calls for ISPS Code review
Martek has called for an urgent review of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code to address the growing threat that UAS pose to the safety and security of commercial shipping, the company announced on 21 May.
The company is writing to all maritime non-government organisations, classification societies and flag administrations to raise the issue and get their individual responses on the matter.
Although the ISPS code mandates requirements, ‘preventing the introduction of unauthorised weapons, incendiary devices or explosive to ships’, the aerial threats from UAS have not been considered yet.
According to the company, the absence of countermeasures for UAS in the ISPS Code requirements for Ship Security Assessments (SSA) and Ship Security Plans (SSP) has alarmed several company security officers and ship security officers within its client base.
Martek said it wants to support the industry to ensure the mandatory objectives of ISPS to detect security threats and take preventive measures against security incidents affecting ships or port facilities used in international trade are fulfilled in its implementation.
