FAA 'thumbs up' for four firms to use UAS

Congress has been pushing the FAA to come up with a solution to allow commercial UAS operations and it looks like the administration has finally taken the first step.

Today it granted five authorisations to four companies who intend to use UAS for commercial gain - something the FAA has previously only agreed for filming companies.

The four companies will carry out a mix of aerial surveying, construction site monitoring and oil rig flare stack inspections, setting some precedent for other companies to follow suit.

The FAA names the companies as Trimble Navigation, VDOS Global, Clayco and Woolpert (two exemptions
