DCNS draws up unmanned options for submarines

DCNS is working up a series of concepts of operation (CONOPS) to utilise autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from a range of its submarines, according to senior company executives.

Speaking to Shephard, marketing director at DCNS’s submarines division Xavier Mesnet, explained that the company was making progress in the deployment and recovery of unmanned systems from its SMX Ocean boat. The same CONOPS could be applicable to its fleet of Barracuda nuclear submarines, he added.

The SMX Ocean is described by DCNS as a ‘transposition of a SSN Barracuda into a SSK for intelligence and action
