USN selects Lockheed for more Trident work
The USN Strategic Systems Programs office has awarded a $43.59 million contract modification to Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems for additional work on the Trident submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile (SLBM) programme (pictured).
The company will provide support for the Trident strategic weapon system plus Trident II D5 SSP Shipboard Integration (SSI) Increments 8 and 16, including navigation subsystem development efforts for the USN (on Columbia-class submarines) and UK RN (on Dreadnought-class boats).
Work will be performed in Mitchell Field, New York (47%); Huntington Beach, California (36%); Clearwater, Florida (9%); Cambridge, Massachusetts (6%); and Hingham, Massachusetts (2%), with an expected completion date of 30 November 2023.
Shephard Defence Insight notes that the RN Dreadnought class will carry eight to 12 Trident D5LE SLBMs, while the Columbia class has 16.
