RfP for USCG’s icebreaker vessel released
The US Navy, in collaboration with the US Coast Guard (USCG), has released a request for proposal (RfP) for the advance procurement and detail design for the USCG’s Heavy Polar Icebreaker (HPIB) vessel.
The RfP has options for detailed design and construction (DD and C) for up to three HPIBs. A single award will be made in 2019 following an open competition.
The coast guard requires at least three new heavy icebreakers to ensure continued access to both polar regions and support US economic, commercial, maritime and national security needs.
Adm Paul Zukunft, Commandant of the USCG, said: ‘These multi-mission vessels are key components of our national strategy to advance US interests and to keep pace with the growing volume of commercial activities in the polar regions.
‘New HPIBs are the most effective and efficient way of meeting our current and anticipated mission demands in these critical regions, and I am ecstatic that we are moving smartly to deliver these national assets to the US Coast Guard fleet.’
