Mediterranean SAR downsized under EU Triton
The lives of thousands of migrants seeking to reach Europe from Africa by crossing the Mediterranean are at risk after the Italian Mare Nostrum programme was downscaled and replaced by a new EU-led initiative.
Italy’s full-scale Mare Nostrum operation was ended on 31 October but will continue in a limited form amid doubts over the effectiveness of the EU-led Operation Triton, which was supposed to replace it.
