Japan, Italy conduct passage exercise
The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force’s JS Akebono and the Italian Navy’s ITS Carlo Margottini have conducted a passage exercise (PASSEX) in the Gulf of Aden.
The PASSEX was designed to maximise the ability of coalition forces to jointly counter piracy in the region. The exercise was coordinated and supported by the Headquarters of Combined Task Force 151 and European Union Naval Force CTF465.
The exercise included a series of communications and manoeuvring exercises, helicopter training and scenario-based coordination. These provided JS Akebono and ITS Carlo Margottini with an opportunity to test communication and coordination links, strengthen the mutual understanding of the ships’ capabilities, practices and procedures, and enhance interoperability in regional counter-piracy operations.
