IMDEX Asia: Ageing vessels and coverage gaps issues for MMEA

Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in Malaysian territorial waters were improving but significant challenges remained to be addressed, from training, inter-agency rivalry, and a lack of vessels to patrol the country’s 895,000km2 area of responsibility.

Addressing delegates at the Search and Rescue conference in Brighton Capt Robert Teh Geok Chuan, senior principal assistant director, search and rescue section at the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), said ageing marine assets were also a problem.

‘We have a wide area of coverage, with ageing assets to work with. There are some gaps in the MMEA coverage, especially where fast boats are needed
