BAE Systems to support weapons on UK and US SSBNs
BAE Systems Technology Solutions and Services is to provide provide logistics engineering and integration support for the strategic weapon systems aboard USN Ohio-class and UK RN Vanguard-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs).
The $20.3 million sole-source contract was awarded by USN Strategic Systems Programs, which directs the development, production, logistic support, and sustained engineering effort of USN strategic weapons.
BAE Systems will complete the work by 30 September 2021 at various US locations, primarily at Saint Mary’s, Georgia (45.4%); Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania (30.1%); and Rockville, Maryland (13.6%).
Shephard Defence Insight notes that the USN has initiated a programme to extend the lives of the D-5 submarine-launched ballistic missiles carried on the Ohio class to roughly 2040, when the submarines are expected to be decommissioned.
