Japan unveils improved 8x8 APC prototype
Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) announced that the first prototype of the Improved Wheeled Armoured Personnel Carrier (WAPC) was delivered to the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) on 10 January.
Developed by Komatsu as successor to the incumbent Type 96 WAPC, the Improved WAPC will be used for various missions such as peacekeeping operations and island defence.
Komatsu conducted technical collaborations with Mowag before developing this next-generation APC. Previously Komatsu was responsible for producing the Type 96 WAPC, 6x6 Type 82 command and communication vehicle, Type 87 reconnaissance combat vehicle and 8x8 NBC reconnaissance vehicle.
