The Japanese government has delivered the first 44m multi-role response vessel (MRRV), BRP Tubbataha, to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

The Japan Marine United (JMU) Yokohama Shipyard will build nine more MRRVs for the PCG. The vessels will be deployed in a range of missions, including rescue, marine environment protection and oil pollution control efforts, and enforcement of maritime laws, particularly with respect to illegal fishing and sea patrol.

The MRRVs will also serve as a platform for rapid response during relief operations, for transporting personnel as well as logistical support. They will be deployed to various PCG districts, including Puerto Princesa, La Union and Manila.

The JMU’s contract includes the supply of standard spare parts and tools, ocean transportation, crew training and marine insurance. The vessels have a range of 1,500 nautical miles and a cruising speed of 25 knots.

The vessels are being supplied under the Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project, which is being implemented as an Official Development Assistance project, via a tied loan extended by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
