IMB warns of complacency over piracy
Attacks on small tankers in SE Asia remain a major area of concern despite falling numbers of global piracy attacks.
According to figures from the International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) third quarter global piracy report, there were a total of 178 incidents so far this year, down from 352, suggesting that pirate attacks on the world’s seas will fall for the third consecutive year.
‘It’s encouraging to see the huge decrease in maritime piracy and armed robbery over the last few years, thanks mainly to international navies deterring pirates off East Africa, and improved on board security,’ said IMB Director, Pottengal
