General Dynamics has begun fabrication of the future Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, Patrick Gallagher, at its Bath Iron Works (BIW) shipyard with the cutting of the first plate of steel.

The Flight IIA destroyer will be equipped with the US Navy’s Aegis Baseline 9 combat system which includes integrated air and missile defence capability. This system delivers high firepower and increased electronic countermeasures capability for anti-air warfare.

When operational, this multi-mission surface combatant will provide increased capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, C2 and anti-surface warfare, able to engage in air, undersea, surface, strike and ballistic missile defence.

Patrick Gallagher will be the last Flight IIA configuration destroyer built by BIW.
