UK’s Fleet Solid Support ship programme deemed on track despite steel supply concerns
Shipbuilders are saying the programme is going ahead on time as the government estimates 7.7 million tonnes of steel are needed for 2026 infrastructure projects.
BAE Systems awarded MK45 gun system contract
BAE Systems has announced that it has been awarded a contract by the US Navy to overhaul and upgrade two Mk 45 naval guns bringing them to the 5-inch 62-caliber Mk 45 Mod 4 configuration. The contract, worth $25.7 million, was announced on 16 August.
The Mod 4 is an upgrade to the Mod 2 design, which 'significantly enhances overall mission performance', improving the accuracy and reliability of the system.
BAE Systems said that upon delivery, the two gun systems will be installed on new construction Arleigh Burke Class (DDG 51) Destroyers. The 5-inch Mk 45 Mod 4 includes strengthened gun and mount subsystems, advanced control system enhancements, a modern touch-screen user interface and a low maintenance gun shield.
Delivery of the system is scheduled for 2014.
