Analysis: Mattis confirms new stability policy initiative
US Defense Secretary James Mattis has confirmed plans the US will implement the Asia Pacific Stability Initiative (APSI), now in the development stages in the US Congress. The announcement was made by Mattis during his speech at the 16th Asia Security Summit in Singapore on 3 June.
This new initiative has nothing to do with the Asia Rebalance, nor is the initiative designed to replace the rebalance.
‘Rebalance is a broad effort that includes military, security, cultural, and economic issues,’ said one US government source. ‘APSI is more narrowly defined in its approach.’
