Unmanned systems head for the fire

The US Department of the Interior (DoI) and US Forest Service are continuing to explore the use of unmanned systems during fire-fighting operations, with further demonstrations taking place in Idaho recently.

Trials conducted on 14 October between Lockheed Martin and KAMAN Corporation demonstrated for federal officials the remotely piloted K-MAX helicopter and use in wildland firefighting scenarios, including cargo drops and single target water drops. 

The demonstration was attended officials from the DoI and US Forest Service Fire and Aviation Management. During the 2015 fire season smaller UAS were deployed on a limited basis during two wildland fires, providing mapping
